JAKARTA - The Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko appealed to residents of the Ukrainian capital to stockpile food and medicine and leave the city if possible, amid the ongoing energy crisis.
Klitschko repeatedly asked Kiev residents to move to areas with alternative sources of electricity and heating, following the continued power outages and heating equipment.
"The situation is very serious and maybe this is not the worst. Prepare food, water, and essential medical supplies. If you have the option to go out of town, to a place that has alternative sources of electricity and heating, take advantage of it," Klitschko wrote via Telegram as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, January 24.
He also asked employers to implement a remote work system for employees if possible.
On January 9, Kiev City authorities reported power outages in a number of areas of the capital, which led to operational restrictions on the metro system and the replacement of electric transport with buses.
Until January 12, 2026, Klitschko said that about 800 residential buildings had experienced a cessation of heating supply.
Massive power outages for hours have begun in various regions of Ukraine since October 10, 2025. The government reported damage to the energy network and utility systems.
The condition was stabilized on October 11, 2025, but the emergency power outage schedule was again implemented starting October 13, 2025.
