JAKARTA - The spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized ensuring Indonesia's approval to join the Peace Council in reference to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution, to encourage a ceasefire, stop violence, protect civilians, and expand humanitarian aid access.

Indonesia along with a number of Muslim countries announced its approval to join the council initiated by US President Donald Trump, in a joint statement by foreign ministers on Thursday.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson II Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said Indonesia's goal of joining the council is to encourage the cessation of violence, the protection of civilians, and the expansion of humanitarian aid access.

"This is a temporary mechanism to stop violence and protect civilians," Nabyl explained in a press statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday (22/1).

Nabyl emphasized that Indonesia's goal of joining was to support the process endorsed by the UN Security Council, support Palestinian independence, the Two State Solution, based on international law and resolutions at the UN.

"So (the Peace Council) is an initiative that is also endorsed by the UN Security Council," said Nabyl.

"Regarding the guliran, we are certainly doing this as a joint effort to achieve the same goal, in line with the principles that we have put forward so far, supporting Palestinian independence, the Two State Solution," he said.

As previously reported, the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates welcomed the invitation extended to their respective leaders by President Trump to join the Peace Council, in a joint statement.

The foreign ministers of Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates welcomed the invitation extended to their respective leaders by President Trump to join the Peace Council.

"Each country will sign the joining document according to the legal procedures and other procedures required by each country," he continued.

The statement further said the top diplomats "reaffirmed their countries' support for President Trump's peace efforts."

The foreign ministers "reaffirmed their countries' commitment to support the implementation of the Peace Council's mission as a transitional government, as outlined in the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and supported by UN Security Council Resolution 2803, which aims to consolidate a permanent ceasefire, support Gaza's reconstruction, and advance a just and lasting peace based on the Palestinian right to self-determination and the establishment of a state in accordance with international law, thus paving the way for security and stability for all countries and peoples in the region."

It is known that President Trump last week announced the formation of the Gaza Strip Peace Council, which he headed in a post on Truth Social, as part of peace efforts in the Palestinian enclave.

The White House has contacted various figures around the world to sit in what is called the "Peace Council", which is headed by the US President, as reported by Al Arabiya from Reuters.

A number of heads of state are reported to have accepted an offer from the US to join the council, which is expected to begin work during the second phase of the peace plan. Israel is among the countries that have expressed their willingness to join the council.

Citing The Associated Press, the Trump-led council was originally designed to be filled with a small group of world leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan.

But Trump's ambitions evolved into a broader concept, sending invitations to dozens of countries and hinting that they would soon become mediators in the Gaza and global conflicts.

A number of heads of state are reported to have accepted an offer from the US to join the council.

On the other hand, a number of countries are reportedly still waiting for clarity on the council from the United States, highlighting its extensive role not only in the Gaza Strip, as well as on the role of the United Nations (UN).

The council will be chaired for life by Trump and will start by addressing the Gaza conflict and then be expanded to handle other conflicts, according to a copy of the letter and draft charter seen by Reuters.

The document states that "lasting peace requires pragmatic judgment, reasonable solutions, and the courage to abandon approaches and institutions that too often fail".

It added that there was "a need for a more agile and effective international peacebuilding body".

In Point 2 of UN Security Council Resolution 2803, the establishment of the Peace Council is intended as a transitional government with an international legal personality that will establish a framework, coordinate funding, for the reconstruction of Gaza in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan and in a manner consistent with the principles of relevant international law, until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program.

"This (approval to join the Peace Council) is purely based on humanitarian mandates, a commitment to fight for Palestinian independence, in line with the UN Charter and Indonesia's free and active foreign policy," Nabyl said.
