JAKARTA - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the forces of the Nordic countries that are members of the EU and NATO are ready to operate in the Arctic region.
In a keynote speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, January 20, von der Leyen said one NATO member, namely Finland, became a supplier of US icebreakers.
"This shows that we have the ability here, in the ice region. This shows that NATO countries in the northern region currently have troops ready for the Arctic," he said as quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik.
Von der Leyen stressed that Arctic security could only be realized through cooperation.
"Arctic security can only be achieved together and therefore the proposed additional tariffs are a mistake, especially among allies who have long had a relationship," he said.
US President Donald Trump earlier announced that he would impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1.
The tariff will be raised to 25 percent and will remain in effect until an agreement is reached on the purchase of Greenland by the US.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should be part of the US.
