JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump on Thursday (15/1) announced the formation of a Peace Council for the Gaza Strip.

"It is a great honor for me to announce that the Peace Council has been formed," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

"The members of the Council will be announced soon, but I can say for sure that this is the largest and most prestigious council ever formed, anytime and anywhere," he continued, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, January 16.

Previously, US special envoy Steve Witkoff announced that the second phase of the ceasefire agreement had begun as part of Trump's 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza.

In a separate post, Trump said the next phase of his plan had officially begun.

"As Chairman of the Peace Council, I support the newly appointed Palestinian technocratic government, the National Committee for Gaza Administration, supported by the High Representative of the Council, to govern Gaza during the transition period," Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Thursday.

"These Palestinian leaders are committed to a future of peace," Trump continued.

Trump also stated that a comprehensive demilitarization agreement with Hamas would be secured with the support of Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar.
