JAKARTA - Iranian Supreme Leader's Advisor Mojtaba Khamenei on Wednesday warned that US President Donald Trump's statement ending the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington "pushed the region into a firestorm."
President Trump said earlier on Wednesday that a memorandum of understanding signed with Iran to end the conflict had "ended."
"The responsibility for the latest escalation, and for the verbal recognition of the cancellation of the memorandum of understanding by the thief politician who was disgraced by the Epstein scandal - a memorandum that has been repeatedly violated in practice - once again pushes the region towards a fire," Ali Akbar Velayati said in Iran's first reaction to President Trump's comments, as reported by Anadolu from the Mehr News Agency (8/7).
Iran "has previously warned that this region is not a place for the political gambling of small countries, and we have repeatedly shown that adventurous actions will get an immediate response," he said.
The US-Israel attacked Tehran and a number of other cities in Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a number of other officials, in addition to civilian casualties and injuries on February 28.
Iran responded by launching attacks on Israeli territory and US-related facilities in countries in the region.
