Member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives And Muawiyah Ramly strongly regretted the incident of mutual beating between a teacher and a number of students at a school that was recorded in a video and went viral on social media. He also questioned the education system in building healthy and civilized relationships.
"Regardless of what the motive is, I deeply regret the incident of mutual attacks, mutual beating, mutual beating between teachers and students. It is not at all a reflection of good educational manners. There is no empathy, morality, and solidarity that should be reflected in our educational world," Andi Muawiyah Ramli told reporters, Thursday, January 15.
He emphasized that schools are actually safe spaces to build character, not an arena for venting emotions or conflicts that lead to violence.
"When teachers and students are involved in physical clashes, what should be questioned is not only the behavior of individuals, but also the failure of the education system in building healthy and civilized relationships," he said.
The PKB legislator also highlighted the ethical aspects of using gadgets and social media in the incident. He regretted that there were parties who recorded and disseminated violent events in the school environment.
"Another thing that is no less important, keep the ethics of using gadgets. I don't know what the motive of the recorder is and why it was posted on social media. If there is an incident like this, it is much better to be resolved through consultation, through the school and parent mechanisms, rather than being shown to the public," he said.
According to the politician, who is familiarly called Amure, the culture of recording and viralizing conflicts has the potential to complicate the atmosphere, hurt the psychology of all parties, and set a bad example for students on how to solve problems.
He also emphasized that teachers have a moral responsibility as an example, while students need to be trained to have a respectful attitude, empathy, and the ability to manage emotions. However, according to him, all of this can only grow if the education ecosystem prioritizes dialogue, not violence and viral sensation.
"This is a loud alarm for all of us. Education should not only pursue academic achievements, but also seriously build character, emotional intelligence, and digital ethics. If the classroom loses the value of humanity and wisdom, then what we inherit is failure," he said.
"The mere repressive approach is not enough. What is needed is a reform of the system, strengthening of values, and collective awareness that education is a process of humanizing human beings," concluded Amure.
As reported, a video went viral showing a high school teacher in East Tanjung Jabung Regency (Tanjabtim), Jambi, being bullied by a number of students. The video went viral and became a discussion on social media.
There are two different versions of the chronology of the incident. From the students' statements, the incident began with the words of a teacher who was considered to have degraded the economic condition of the students. Meanwhile, according to the teacher's version, this event was triggered by a student's rebuke which he considered to be impolite.
As a result of the reprimand, the teacher in question went to the classroom to ask for an explanation. However, the situation actually heated up until the emotions peaked and the teacher reflexively slapped one of the students.
