BANDUNG - The Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) Bandung handled as many as 10 patients with symptoms of influenza A (H3N2) subclade K or known as super flu in early January 2026.
The Head of the Emerging and Re-emerging Disease (Pinere) Infection Team of the Bandung RSHS, Yovita Hartantri, said that the number was only identified at the beginning of this year with varying ages and varying degrees of severity.
"The number of cases we handle is around 10 cases in early January," said Yovita, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 9.
Yovita explained that of the 10 patients, two of them were babies, aged nine months and one year, respectively, one patient was 11 years old, five patients were in the age range of 20 to 60 years, and two patients were over 60 years old.
He said that the symptoms experienced by patients varied. However, the super flu is known as a virus that evolves quickly, so it has the potential to cause more severe symptoms than seasonal influenza.
"Compared to seasonal flu, the symptoms can indeed be more severe. Especially in the elderly or patients with comorbidities, treatment can be longer and risk of causing severe conditions to death," he said.
He said the severity of the disease was greatly influenced by the patient's comorbid conditions as well as the individual's immune system.
To anticipate transmission and handle patients optimally, RSHS Bandung has prepared a special isolation facility, similar to the handling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We have prepared intensive isolation rooms, regular treatment rooms, and isolation rooms in the emergency room, both for intensive and non-intensive patients," said Yovita.
Yovita appealed to the public to remain vigilant against severe flu symptoms and immediately consult a health facility, especially for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and patients with comorbidities.
