BANDA ACEH - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Aceh Regency stated that thousands of residents were affected by flooding following heavy rains in the last two days that hit the area.
Acting Head of the East Aceh Regency BPBD Afifullah said that the flood disaster spread and had an impact on 44 villages or gampongs spread across 10 sub-districts in East Aceh Regency.
"Previously, flooding occurred in five sub-districts, but now it has spread to 10 sub-districts. This follow-up flood is due to heavy rain since Wednesday (7/1) evening. A number of villages are again flooded, even some have experienced a significant increase in water discharge," said Afifullah, Thursday, January 8.
The 10 sub-districts that were flooded included Simpang Ulim, Pante Bidari, Indra Makmur, Banda Alam, Madat, Julok, Bireum Bayeun, Rantau Pereulak, Sungai Raya, and Rantau Selamat.
Based on provisional data, said Afifullah, the number of affected residents reached 5,032 people from 1,191 families. Of this number, as many as 4,902 people from 1,151 families are still staying in their respective homes.
"Meanwhile, 130 people from 40 families have been displaced to safer locations. The displaced people are spread across three evacuation points that have been prepared," he said.
Afifullah said the BPBD team together with the musyawarah elements of the sub-district leadership (muspika), the aparatur gampong, and the sub-district social welfare team (TKSK) continued to monitor and record the residents affected by the subsequent flood.
He added that there have been no reports of casualties, injuries, or missing residents due to the flood. However, the BPBD team continues to increase its readiness and vigilance given the potential for rain to remain high in the next few days.
"We appeal to the public who are in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of field officers, and immediately evacuate if the water discharge continues to increase," he said.
BPBD East Aceh also continues to coordinate with related agencies for emergency handling, including providing basic needs for affected residents and ensuring the safety of the community in areas still flooded.
Afifullah said the data on residents affected by the subsequent flood was still temporary and could change, considering that the data collection process at the gampong and kecamatan levels was still ongoing.
"We continue to update the proposed flood disaster data. We hope that the conditions will improve soon and the water can recede as soon as possible. We continue to remind the public to be aware of subsequent floods," said Afifullah.
