JAKARTA - Secretary of State Prasetyo Hadi said that the government would soon start construction of the "Waste to Energy" project or waste processing into electricity (PSEL) which will be launched in 34 points.
Prasetyo explained that the PSEL project is part of a downstream program that will be carried out with the groundbreaking this month until March.
"Regarding the (project) Waste to Energy that will be built in 34 regencies/cities or in 34 points, which today the waste has reached more than 1,000 tons per day, this requires immediate handling to be processed," said Prasetyo, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, January 7.
Prasetyo explained that the PSEL project would be launched immediately because the daily waste pile volume reached an average of 1,000 tons per day.
Therefore, the development of PSEL is expected to be able to reduce environmental burdens while reducing health risks due to waste accumulation.
PSEL is one of 18 strategic downstream projects that will start to be worked on in the period from January to March 2026.
The government said that the 18 downstream projects had passed the pre-feasibility study stage and were estimated to have an investment value of IDR 600 trillion. The realization of investment in these projects will be led directly by Danantara Indonesia.
PSEL itself is a waste processing process that cannot be recycled through technology to produce energy, such as heat, electricity, or alternative fuels.
This technology is expected to support national energy independence, reduce the volume of open waste, and reduce dependence on conventional energy such as coal.
In addition to the "Waste to Energy" project, Prasetyo also said that the government would soon groundbreaking a coal gasification project into Dimethyl Ether (DME).
DME is one part of coal beneficiation, where low-calorific coal is processed into an alternative gas. This is expected to reduce Indonesia's need for LPG gas.
"Then there are also several programs related to energy, programs in the agricultural sector as well," concluded Prasetyo.
