JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia has succeeded in achieving rice self-sufficiency by 2025, faster than the initial target set by the government.
The achievement was emphasized by the President when attending the 2025 National Christmas Celebration Summit at the Indoor Tennis, Jakarta, Monday, January 5.
Prabowo said food self-sufficiency, especially rice, was a commitment he had conveyed a long time ago, even before becoming President.
"When I campaigned for decades, I always said that Indonesia must be self-sufficient in food. I always talk wherever I go," said Prabowo as quoted by ANTARA.
He explained that initially the target of self-sufficiency in rice could be achieved within four years. However, the target was successfully realized in just one year thanks to the collaboration of other related ministries and institutions.
According to him, this success not only has a positive impact on national food security, but also contributes to national food stability.
"I give a target to my team, we have to be self-sufficient in rice for four years. At this Christmas celebration, I am proud today that I can convey this through December 31, 2025, the Indonesian nation is now self-sufficient in rice. In 2025 we will not import rice at all," he explained.
Prabowo said the success of food self-sufficiency was an important foundation for the implementation of other strategic programs, including the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.
The program aims to reduce the number of children with malnutrition. The government continues to work with a real-based approach, not just political promises.
