JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his hope that partner countries would continue to provide support to sustain the strength of the Ukrainian armed forces, which currently number around 800,000 personnel.
"Support for the Ukrainian army is very important. This is the number one priority, a strong Ukrainian army, numbering 800,000 people. This means resources and salaries. This is very important, and we rely on our partners," Zelenskyy said, as quoted by the news portal Novyny.LIVE quoted via Antara, Wednesday, December 31.
The statement was made amid intensive international discussions on resolving the Ukrainian conflict. On December 14-15, Berlin hosted negotiations involving the special envoy of the United States Steve Witkoff, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, and President Zelenskyy.
After the meeting, Witkoff reported progress in a plan to resolve the conflict that is said to include 20 points.
EU leaders then issued a statement regarding security guarantees for Ukraine and steps towards resolving the conflict. One of the points discussed was the possibility of sending multinational troops to Ukraine, as well as a commitment to maintaining the Ukrainian military's strength at a minimum level of 800,000 personnel.
Meanwhile, on December 28, US President Donald Trump met with Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. During the meeting, Trump stated that Europe would bear most of the burden of security guarantees for Ukraine, although the United States would still provide assistance.
Zelenskyy then claimed that security guarantees between the United States and Ukraine had been fully agreed.
After the bilateral meeting, Trump and Zelenskyy also joined a telephone conversation with European leaders to discuss further steps regarding the Ukrainian conflict.
Before meeting Zelenskyy, Trump revealed that he had had a phone call that he considered good and very productive with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
