JAKARTA - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI again urges all customers to increase vigilance against various digital fraud methods, including the spread of fake Christmas greetings that are often rampant before Christmas celebrations.
BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said that in the last quarter of the year, cyber criminals usually take advantage of the momentum of religious holidays to carry out their actions by targeting customers through short messages, social media, and chat applications.
"Ahead of Christmas Day, we remind customers to be more vigilant against fraudulent schemes in the name of Merry Christmas, especially those accompanied by suspicious links or files," Okki said in an official statement.
According to Okki, one of the modus operandi that is often used is sending Christmas greetings messages accompanied by a file or link in the form of a fake gift application (APK). The application contains malware that can record customer personal data, including banking information, if downloaded and used.
"If the customer downloads the application or fills in personal data in it, the perpetrator can use the information to access the account and steal the customer's balance," he explained.
BNI urges customers not to carelessly click links or download files from unknown sources, and always verify the authenticity of the received message. In addition, customers are asked not to share banking confidential data, such as card numbers, CVV/CVC, PIN, and One Time Password (OTP) to any party.
"Make sure your device is equipped with antivirus, the system is always updated, and only use official applications downloaded through trusted platforms," added Okki.
Okki also invites all customers to remain smart and vigilant in digital transactions. "Don't just click. Let's work together to protect the security of data and banking transactions. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate," concluded Okki.
By increasing mutual vigilance, BNI hopes that all customers can avoid the risk of cybercrime and continue to transact safely, comfortably, and responsibly in the midst of increasing digital activity towards the end of the year. (ADV)
