JAKARTA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, after a military officer was injured by an explosive device in Rafah, vowing to retaliate.

The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement, Hamas must fully comply with the October agreement, noting that the agreement envisages the militant group being removed from power in Gaza as well as demilitarizing and deradicalizing the region.

"Israel will respond accordingly," the statement said, citing Al Arabiya from Reuters (24/12).

The Israeli military earlier said an explosive device had exploded near a military vehicle in the southern Gaza Strip's Rafah area, leaving a soldier lightly wounded.

Violence has eased but has not stopped since the Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 10, and both sides regularly accuse each other of violating the truce.

The Gaza Health Ministry said Israel has killed more than 400 people in the territory since the ceasefire came into effect.

The 20-point plan issued by US President Donald Trump in September called for an initial ceasefire followed by steps towards a wider peace.

The plan also calls for Hamas to disarm and have no governing role in Gaza, and for Israel to withdraw from the territory, which is still devastated after two years of war.

The two sides have not fully agreed on all points in the plan. Hamas said it would only hand over its weapons if a Palestinian state was established.
