Nataru Security Post Seized 40 Kg Dog Meat Without Documents at Yos Sudarso Port, Ambon

JAKARTA - The Maluku Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Office (BKHIT) has destroyed as much as 42 kilograms (kg) of animal products in the form of pork and dog meat without quarantine documents.

The destruction was carried out after the Quarantine Officer of the Nataru security post at the Yos Sudarso Port in Ambon seized the belongings of the KM Labobar passengers consisting of 2 kg of pork and 40 kg of meat with the owner named Berlin Ririhena, a resident of Ambon City.

"The animal products were not accompanied by quarantine documents and did not meet the requirements for the media traffic carrier as regulated in laws and regulations," said Head of BKHIT Maluku Abdur Rohman in Ambon, Wednesday, quoted by Antara.

He stated that the detention and destruction actions were carried out as a preventive measure against the entry of quarantine animal disease pests (HPHK), especially African Swine Fever (ASF), into the Maluku region.

"As we know, in some parts of Papua ASF has been infected, while in Maluku the case is nil, this prevention is to minimize the spread of the disease," he said.

He explained that the quarantine action referred to Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine, Government Regulation Number 29 of 2023, and the Minister of Agriculture's Decree Number 708 of 2024 concerning the Status of Animal Disease Situations.

According to the provisions, he said, the Quarantine Officer first issued a Detention Letter (K-6). However, because the owner stated that he was unable to bring back the carrier media out of the Ambon area, a Destruction Letter (K-8.1) was issued.

"The destruction was carried out to break the chain of disease transmission and protect animal and public health," he said.

The method of destruction of pork and dog meat is done by burning it until it is completely burned, then the remaining burning is buried. This step is taken to prevent environmental pollution and the potential for the spread of disease agents.

BKHIT Maluku appeals to the public to comply with the provisions of quarantine in the traffic of animals and animal products between regions, and to complete each shipment with official documents in order to maintain biological security in the Maluku region.
