JAKARTA - Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) to strengthen diplomacy with British authorities.
This request was conveyed by Member of Commission I of the DPR, Oleh Soleh, in response to the steps taken by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in London which reported the actions of British porn star Tia Emma Billinger alias Bonnie Blue to local authorities, who allegedly harassed the Indonesian flag.
The abuse of the state symbol was known after the circulation of a video of Bonnie demonstrating obscene movements on top of the Indonesian flag. The video then went viral on social media.
According to Oleh Soleh, the action that allegedly harassed the Red and White flag, cannot be tolerated because it concerns the honor and sovereignty of the Indonesian nation.
"I support the steps of the Indonesian Embassy in London who moved quickly and decisively to report this case to the British authorities. This is a form of state presence in protecting symbols of national sovereignty," said Oleh Soleh in his statement, Tuesday, December 23.
By emphasizing that the national flag is a symbol of national honor protected by international laws and norms. Therefore, according to him, any action that humiliates or insults the symbol of the state, both at home and abroad, must be taken seriously.
The PKB legislator from the West Java XI District also encouraged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia to take appropriate and measured diplomatic steps so that the case can be processed in accordance with the applicable law in the UK.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must conduct diplomacy in a good and professional manner, so that this issue can be followed up by local authorities. Strong diplomacy is important to ensure respect for our national symbols," he said.
By Soleh, he hopes that this case will be a lesson for all parties to be more respectful of any state symbols, and not to make provocative actions for the sake of popularity or personal interests.
"We want relations between countries to remain based on mutual respect. Freedom of expression must not violate the fundamental values and dignity of a nation," he concluded.
