JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Dave Laksono, highlighted the serious findings of two Indonesian citizens (WNI) who were infected with leprosy in Romania, after the last 40 years the disease did not appear. Dave asked the Indonesian government to thoroughly examine the health of migrant workers as part of the aspects of prevention and management of the placement of migrant workers.
"The health examination needs to be carried out not only at the initial stage of departure, but also through a mechanism of periodic checks in the destination country," Dave emphasized.
"This case is a reminder that health checks for prospective migrant workers must be carried out more comprehensively and consistently," Dave said when confirmed, Thursday, December 18.
The head of the commission which deals with foreign relations also encouraged cross-ministerial coordination which includes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Ministry of Protection of Migrant Workers (KP2MI), and the Ministry of Health (MoH) to ensure an increase in the standard of protection of Indonesian citizens abroad.
"We will also strengthen the evaluation of health examination standards, including cooperation with health facilities in the placement country," he emphasized.
"We must ensure that every Indonesian citizen who works abroad is protected, has access to decent health care, and does not face discrimination due to certain medical conditions," said Dave.
"We will also ask for an official report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and KP2MI to ensure that all steps for handling and prevention are carried out according to standards," Dave said.
"We want to ensure that the two Indonesian citizens receive full protection and do not face any stigma during the recovery process," said the West Java Dapil legislator, Thursday, 11 November.
"The state must be present, and Commission I of the DPR RI will seriously monitor this. Leprosy is not easy to spread and requires close contact for a long time, but proper medical treatment and good public communication are needed so that it does not cause stigma," said Dave.
