JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has helped transport 116 tons of garbage that has accumulated at the Cimanggis Market, South Tangerang City, Banten, to respond to public complaints and prevent wider environmental impacts.

"We respond quickly to citizen complaints by ensuring that waste transportation and location arrangement are in place. In the future, KLH/BPLH will encourage the strengthening of the waste storage and monitoring system so that the waste problem in the market can be controlled sustainably," said Minister of LH/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, December 18.

The handling of 116 tons of garbage was carried out after a report from residents about a pile of garbage that was towering to the roof of the market building. This condition produces a pungent smell, disturbing the activities of traders and the community, and has the potential to pollute the surrounding environment.

Following this, KLH/BPLH immediately deployed joint officers from the South Tangerang City Environmental Service and the Market Service to transport them from the evening until the next morning.

The garbage that was transported came from market activities and the dumping of people around. The area which was previously filled with piles is now being cleaned gradually.

As a follow-up step, KLH/BPLH hardened the location and prepared containers as temporary shelters (TPS).

Special trucks will also be placed in the area that has been cleaned to ensure that market waste is handled properly and does not pile up again.

In addition, KLH/BPLH requested the formation of a task force (satgas) at the location prone to illegal dumping to maintain market cleanliness consistently.

The accumulation of garbage in South Tangerang was triggered by the temporary closure of the Cipeucang landfill for about 10 days due to the arrangement and normalization of water channels and rivers that were covered with garbage.

The process of arranging is estimated to last up to one month. As a temporary solution, the garbage collection is diverted to 54 TPS3R with a capacity of 99 tons per day and two TPST with a capacity of 14 tons per day, so that the collection service continues to run.

KLH/BPLH emphasized that handling the garbage of the Cimanggis Market is part of efforts to strengthen urban waste management that is responsive, collaborative, and oriented towards protecting the health and environment of the community.

"We will monitor the follow-up in the field and ensure that waste management is carried out in accordance with the provisions, involving local governments and the community," said Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
