JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites the public to see the portrait and understand Indonesia's relationship with Singapore through the launch of the book "The Next Chapter: Envisioning the Future of Indonesia - Singapore Relations".
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore held the launch and book surgery as part of the 58th anniversary of Indonesia-Singapore diplomatic relations.
The launch, which was held in Cikini, Central Jakarta on Wednesday (17/12), was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Suryopratomo, the Singapore Ambassador to Indonesia Kwok Fook Seng, ambassadors and diplomats of friendly countries to academic representatives, and ministries/institutions that are close partners of the Singapore Government.
Acting Director General for Asia Pacific and Africa, Zelda Wulan Kartika, emphasized that the Indonesia-Singapore relationship is one of the most mature and strategic partnerships in the region.
"For 58 years, Indonesia and Singapore have built a strong partnership, based on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to maintaining regional stability and prosperity," he said in his opening remarks, launching the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement, Wednesday (17/12).
The book "The Next Chapter: Envisioning the Future of Indonesia - Singapore Relations" contains contributions from academics and practitioners, including former Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr. Marty Natalegawa and edited by Prof. Leo Suryadinata and Dr. Siwage Dharma Negara.
According to Zelda, this book not only records the achievements of bilateral relations, but also offers a strategic perspective to answer future challenges.
"This book invites us to look at the relationship between Indonesia and Singapore in a more visionary way, especially in the face of economic transformation, sustainability agenda, and global geopolitical dynamics," he explained.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore, Suryo Pratomo, said "This book is our real contribution to helping understand the dynamics of the Indonesia-Singapore relationship, as well as mapping opportunities and challenges to bring the partnership between the two countries to a higher level in the future."
The Ambassador, who is familiarly called Tommy, also hopes that he will continue to contribute to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries after he no longer serves as the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore in January.
In the last 10 years, Singapore has been recorded as the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for Indonesia.
In addition, there is also strategic cooperation such as the Flight Information Region, Defense Cooperation, Extradition Agreement, development of Special Economic Zones (SEZ), connectivity, renewable energy, and education that strengthen relations between the two countries.
The strategic cooperation between the two countries makes the partnership also have strategic significance for the ASEAN region.
The book discussion presents critical views on the future direction of the Indonesia-Singapore relationship, including opportunities for new economic cooperation, regional challenges, and the role of both countries in maintaining ASEAN stability and centrality.
Through this book, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that the developing discussion can become a reference for policy as well as strengthen public understanding of the importance of the Indonesia-Singapore relationship for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
