JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has confirmed that the Bukittinggi-Padang National Road through the Anai Valley Route will be opened for limited functional use for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles after the disaster in West Sumatra (Sumbar).

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo emphasized that the functional opening was carried out by prioritizing the safety aspects of road users.

"The Anai Valley line is the backbone of West Sumatra connectivity. This limited functional opening is an important step to ensure that people's economic and social activities are moving again, while permanent handling continues," said Dody in his statement, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 16.

This opening was carried out after the acceleration of post-disaster handling of floods and landslides that hit a number of affected points in West Sumatra.

The opening of the Anai Valley Line is limited in function to immediately restore community mobility and the smooth distribution of logistics.

The Anai Valley line has a strategic role as the main artery connecting the western coastal region with the central region of West Sumatra, as well as part of the important Padang-Bukittinggi-Pekanbaru corridor that supports regional economic activities.

The interruption of the section on the Anai Valley Line previously had a significant impact on the Padang-Bukittinggi-Pekanbaru traffic flow.

Vehicles were forced to be diverted through the Padang-Sitinjau Lauik-Solok-Danau Singkarak-Padang Panjang route, which caused a fairly high density, especially in the Sitinjau Lauik area.

Dody said the PU Ministry needs to study the development of alternative routes as a permanent solution to reduce the burden of national road traffic in the Anai Valley, including the continuation of the Padang-Sicincin Toll Road from Padang City to Bukittinggi through the construction of a flyover or tunnel.

"This is still an initial proposal from the hall. Technical studies will be carried out immediately so that in the future the access to Padang-Bukittinggi will be safer and more reliable," he said again.

As the Ministry of PU accelerates handling at various access points affected by the West Sumatra disaster, a number of major access points between cities and districts have now reopened.

Several sections, including the Padang-Pariaman-Lubuk Basung-West Pasaman-North Sumatra border and the Padang Panjang-Bukittinggi-Lubuk Sikaping-North Sumatra border sections, can already be passed.

Then the Bukittinggi-Payakumbuh-Riau border, the Padang-Painan-Indrapura-Bengkulu border, the Padang-Solok-Sawahlunto-Dharmasraya-Jambi border and the Padang-Lubuk Selasih-Surian-Padang Aro-Jambi border.

The reopening of these main access points greatly supports the smooth distribution of logistics, ensures public services continue to run, and accelerates the recovery of the community's economy after the disaster.
