JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) emphasized that the transfer of surveillance vessels for the distribution of disaster assistance to the Sumatra region did not interfere with national maritime surveillance, because some of the fleet remained on standby to guard Indonesian waters.

Director General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Monitoring (PSDKP) of the KKP, Pung Nugroho Saksono (Ipunk), said that his party had diverted seven surveillance vessels to support the distribution of humanitarian aid to the Sumatra disaster site.

"This is only seven of us who have been shifted. This means that it does not affect surveillance at sea," said Ipunk in the delivery of humanitarian assistance from the Ministry of Empowerment of Women and Child Protection (Kementerian PPPA) through the Orca 6 Surveillance Ship owned by the KKP in Muara Baru, North Jakarta, Saturday.

He emphasized that the KKP has 34 fishing surveillance ships, so the transfer of seven ships for the distribution of assistance to Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra does not affect Indonesia's maritime surveillance, because the other fleet continues to operate to protect national waters.

"We still have many ships, the number of our surveillance ships is all 34," explained Ipunk, who is also the Commander of the Aceh Disaster Care KKP Task Force, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

The seven surveillance ships that were diverted in the distribution of humanitarian assistance to the flood and landslide disaster locations to the Sumatra region include KP Hiu 12, KP Hiu 16, KP Hiu 08, KP Hiu Macan 05, KP Barakuda 01, KP Orca 05, KP Orca 06.

Furthermore, he said, the KKP deployed seven fishing surveillance ships and one surveillance aircraft to support the distribution of assistance to disaster-affected areas in Sumatra, especially areas that had not been touched by the initial handling.

"We deployed seven ships and one airborne surveillance aircraft. Because at the beginning of yesterday, the condition was still untouched, such as Aceh Tamiang," he said.

According to him, the early presence of the KKP fleet at the affected location received a positive response from the community because it was considered responsive in supporting emergency response efforts and helping meet basic logistical needs.

In carrying out this humanitarian task, he continued, the KKP also coordinated intensively with Basarnas and other related personnel to ensure that the distribution of assistance was effective and safe.

Although some of the fleet was diverted for humanitarian missions, the KKP ensured that the surveillance function at sea continued as it should according to its duties and authorities.

Indonesian water surveillance is still carried out by surveillance ships to maintain maritime security and prevent illegal activities, in line with the commitment of the KKP to support disaster management in Sumatra.

"Regarding how to monitor at sea, we will continue to monitor," he said.

Ipunk added that in total his party had received 159 tons of humanitarian aid from various ministries/institutions and other related parties which were distributed gradually to the disaster areas in the three provinces.
