From Kakatua To Rainbow Perkici, 4 Papuan Animals Rescued From Illegal Trade

The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) continues the legal process against the suspect DL who is suspected of trading four protected birds in Jayapura City, Papua.

Head of the Law Enforcement Center (Gakkum) of Maluku and Papua Region of the Ministry of Transportation, Fredrik Tumbel, said that the case file for the suspect DL had been declared complete by the Papua High Prosecutor's Office and was ready to be transferred to the next stage.

"The Ministry of Forestry's commitment in eradicating conservation crimes, we will continue to act decisively against any form of violation that threatens the preservation of Papuan animals and ecosystems. This case began with the integrated patrol of the Maluku Papua Gakkum Center with the Papua KSDA Center on October 15, 2025.

During the operation, officers secured DL at his residence and confiscated four protected animals. The animal consists of one chef's cockatoe (Cacatua Galerita), one black head kasturi (Lorius lory), one parrot (Electus roratus), and one rainbow pipe (Trichoglossus haematodes).

The birds play a crucial role in preserving the Papuan ecosystem. As endemic species, they act as polynatists who help the process of pollinating plants and spreading seeds, which support forest growth and maintain biodiversity.

Losing the animal can have a direct impact on damage to the forest ecosystem, affect the food chain, and threaten other habitats that depend on natural balance.

Director General of Forestry Law Enforcement, Dwi Januanto Nugroho, in a separate statement stated that the crime of trafficking in wild plants and animals (TSL) was the fourth-largest turnover crime in the world after drugs, illegal firearms, and human trafficking.

“Dari pengungkapan ini, kita ketahui bahwa perburuan tumbuhan dan satwa liar masih sering terjadi. Oleh karena itu, Ditjen Gakkumhut menunjukkan komitmen penuh untuk memberantas kejahatan TSL,” ujar Dwi.
