JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin said the US delegation is expected to arrive in Moscow next week to discuss America's latest proposal to end the Kremlin war in Ukraine. But Putin insists the war continues unless Ukraine 'submits'.
Speaking at a press conference during a visit to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Putin said no peace agreement draft was agreed upon in the final talks between the US and Ukraine, only a list of issues to be discussed.
Putin also said it was "free" to sign any documents with Ukraine's current leadership. He accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of not having the legitimacy to do so.
In a series of hardline statements -- his most extensive statement on the latest US-proposed peace plan to date -- Putin reiterated some of Russia's hardline demands, including Ukrainian troops, having to withdraw from territory Moscow claims.
Putin ruled out signing any ceasefire agreement before Ukrainian forces withdrew.
"If Ukrainian troops leave the occupied territory, then military action will be stopped. If they don't want to leave, then we will achieve it with armed force," Putin said.
He also said recognition of Russia's occupation of Crimea, Donbas, and most parts of eastern and southern Ukraine should be part of negotiations with the US.
Putin showed his confidence in Russia's position on the battlefield, claiming there was "positive dynamics" everywhere on the front lines. The president said Russia was "in principle ready" to "fight until the last Ukraine."
Ahead of Witkoff's visit to Moscow next week, Putin said America's latest peace proposal "could be the basis for future agreements."
