JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the search and rescue operation (SAR) for landslide victims in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java, was officially stopped on Tuesday night after taking place for 10 days.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said the evaluation of the joint team decided that SAR operations could not be continued due to safety factors that were not possible at the disaster site.
"The condition of the ground that is still moving, the weather is uncertain, and the extent and depth of the landslide material is the main consideration of closing the SAR operation in Pandanarum Village," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, November 25.
He explained that today as well as the last day of the search, the joint team managed to find five additional bodies and had been taken to the Banjarnegara Regional Hospital for identification purposes.
Thus, a total of 17 people died, including two body parts.
BNPB confirmed that 11 residents had not been found even though all search techniques had been sought during SAR operations and personnel safety were a priority in making these decisions.
In addition to the death toll, BNPB recorded four residents injured and 1,019 people from 343 families displaced in five evacuation points.
Abdul ensured that BNPB provided inherent assistance to local governments for environmental restoration of disaster impacts, including psychosocial services, administrative assistance to victims' families, as well as plans to relocate residents from landslide-prone zones.
Data from the main operating post in Pandanarum Village reported material losses covering more than 200 houses collapsed to damage to several worship facilities, road access between villages, irrigation canals, agricultural areas, and livestock owned by residents.
"Most of the victims' families and relatives attended the process of closing the SAR operation. Followed by a prayer together. In an atmosphere full of emotion, they showed extraordinary fortitude to receive the final results of the operation which technically did not allow it to be extended," said Abdul.
