TEMBILAHAN - The Indragiri Hilir Regency Fire and Rescue Service (Damkar), Riau, is still caring for a giant crocodile measuring 5.7 meters long and weighing 585 kilograms, which was captured by residents in Sungai Undan Village, Reteh District, about three weeks ago.
The Head of the Indragiri Hilir Fire and Rescue Service, Junaidi, said the crocodile suffered abrasions on both hands and feet, especially on the right foot.
The wounds were caused by tight ropes tied during the capture, which led to a severe infection.
"His hands and feet are abraded. But the most serious is on his right foot. The wound caused an infection," Junaidi told Antara on Wednesday, November 19.
To treat the wounds, officers sprinkled antibiotic powder on the injured area immediately after the crocodile was evacuated to a temporary holding area on the Indragiri Hilir Fire and Rescue Service grounds on November 2. They also administered a special IV drip and mixed antibiotics into the crocodile's body.
The Inhil Fire Department has also consulted with veterinarians from the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) to ensure proper medical treatment.
"On the second day after the evacuation, we started administering medication. He's now starting to move around in his cage. Yesterday, he seemed weak, possibly due to his injuries," Junaidi explained.
Although his condition has improved, the giant crocodile still refuses to eat. Officers have tried putting live chickens in the cage, but the wild animal refused to touch them.
When asked when the crocodile will be released back into its natural habitat in Sungai Bela, Kuala Indragiri District, Junaidi admitted he couldn't confirm yet.
"Not yet," he said.
