KPAI Requests Tightened School Supervision After Explosion At SMAN 72 North Jakarta

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah requested that the surveillance system in schools be tightened after the explosion incident at SMAN 72 Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

"This is a serious concern. Schools must have a clear monitoring mechanism for the goods brought by children. At school, children should get protection, security and safety," Margaret said while reviewing the victims at the Jakarta Islamic hospital, Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, Friday 7 November 2025.

Margaret said, based on data received by KPAI, about 14 children were hospitalized, while others were being treated for minor injuries.

"Some have just been referred to the hospital because their condition does not allow them to be treated at the puskesmas. There are also those who experience disturbances in the ears and head," he said.

In addition to physical injuries, Margaret assessed that the incident also caused deep psychological trauma to children, both direct victims and witnesses at school.

"All children, both those who were injured and those who witnessed the incident, must have experienced trauma. Therefore, it is necessary to provide psychological assistance by competent parties," said Margaret.

KPAI, he continued, encourages the trauma healing process to be carried out by certified psychologists and involves the Women and Children Service Unit (PPA), the Indonesian Psychology Association (HIMPSI), and other professionals who understand the rehabilitation of children.

"I think trauma healing must be done by competent ones. In this case, of course, a certified psychologist and not all can do it," he said.

Margaret emphasized the importance of a thorough evaluation of schools related to the security system, including supervision of students' luggage and early detection of changes in children's behavior.

Supervision of children at school is not only a matter of physicality, such as goods being brought, but also behavioral and psychological conditions. If there are children who often are alone or appear depressed, don't let them go," he said.

He added that this incident was a momentum for schools and the government to strengthen the implementation of the Child Friendly School program and pay attention to safety from the physical and psychological side of students.

"At school, children should get security and safety protection. This is certainly homework," he said.
