Zohran Mamdani, Trump's "enemy" And The Sixth Immigrant Who Becomes New York Walkot

JAKARTA - Zohran Mamdani has made history in New York City after winning the local Mayor Election (Piwalkot) on Tuesday night.

"Our future is in our hands," Mamdani said in a passionate victory speech, quoted by ABC News.

He will be the first Islamic New York Mayor, as well as a US citizen of the first South Asian descent who became Mayor of New York after being sworn in on January 1, 2026.

Another status is predicted by Mamdani to be 34 years old after being inaugurated, namely holding the status of the third youngest New York Mayor in the city's history.

Previously, Hugh J. Grant was 30 years old when he was sworn in in 1889 as Mayor of New York, John Purroy Mitchel was also 34 years old when he took office in 1914.

Mamdani who was born in Africa will also become the 6th Mayor of New York with the status of immigrants after being sworn in.

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party, is known to have led a hunger strike in front of the US White House in November 2024. The action called for a ceasefire resolution in Gaza.

He also often criticized the previous New York Mayor Eric Adams. Under Adams' leadership, the New York City Government called for officials to act RAejtif against demonstrations of pro-Palestinian students at a number of universities in New York in the spring of 2024.

Apart from being responded to repressively, many students for participating in the pro-Palestinian demonstration at that time, were expelled from the university. Meanwhile, his graduation was rejected for participating in demonstrations for 10 consecutive days in April 2024.

Mamdani's socialist attitudes have also been targeted by President of the United States (US) Donald Trump. Even Trump had threatened to freeze federal funds to New York City if Mamdani won Piwalkot New York on Tuesday, November 4 local time.

Trump also openly supported Mamdani's rival in the contest, independent mayor Andrew Cuomo.

These efforts have been assessed as a form of Trump's intervention that has exceeded the party's limits on New York's local politics.
