JAKARTA - The armed wing of Hamas found the body of an Israeli soldier held hostage by Palestinian militants in Gaza. The handover of bodies to Israel was imminent.

Reported by Reuters on Tuesday, November 4, Hamas said the body was found in Shejaia, the eastern suburbs of Gaza City in an area still occupied by Israeli forces, after Israel gave access to the site to teams from Hamas and the International Red Cross Committee.

Under an effective ceasefire agreement on October 10, Hamas handed over all 20 surviving hostages in Gaza in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and prisoners of war detained in Israel.

Hamas also promised to hand over the bodies of the dead hostages, but said the destruction from the war in Gaza had made it difficult to search for bodies. Israel accuses Hamas of buying time.

Currently Hamas has returned 20 of the 28 hostages' bodies that have been buried in Gaza. In return, Israel handed over 270 bodies of Palestinians that it had killed since the war erupted in October 2023, Gaza health authorities said.

Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and held 251 people hostage in their cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's retaliatory attacks in the Gaza Strip killed more than 68,000 Palestinians, health officials in the enclave said.

US-brokered ceasefire has generally been maintained despite repeated violent incidents. Palestinian health authorities say Israeli forces have killed 239 people in attacks since the ceasefire took effect, nearly half in one day last week when Israel retaliated against militant attacks on its troops.

Israel says its three troops have been killed and have targeted a number of militants who are said to have approached the line behind Israeli forces that have been withdrawn by ceasefire.

Earlier, Gaza's health authorities said Israeli fire killed a man in Jabalia in northern Gaza. The Israeli military said it had killed a "terrorist" who crossed into territory that was still occupied by the army and posed a threatening threat.
