The firefighters extinguished the fire for about eight hours in a fire in the warehouse for the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3) owned by PT Dame Alam Sejahtera, in Karawang Regency, West Java.
The Head of the Fire and Rescue Agency for Regional Disaster Management (BPBD) Karawang, Rohmat Ilyas, when contacted in Karawang, Friday said that the fire extinguishing process lasted quite a long time because there was flammable material in the B3 waste management warehouse.
He conveyed that officers received reports of fires from residents on Thursday night, October 23 at around 22.00 WIB. Then the officers went straight to the location of the fire, on Jalan Raya Proklamasi, Kaceot Village, Tungak Jati Village, West Karawang District, Karawang.
A total of seven fire engines were immediately dispatched to extinguish the fire. However, the extinguishing process was hampered, because there was flammable oil in the warehouse area.
"In the warehouse, the burning oil emitted a fire. So we had difficulty extinguishing it, and it took a long time to extinguish it," said Rohmat, quoted by ANTARA.
"The process of extinguishing the fire is quite heavy, because every oil stored in the burning warehouse continues to burn when doused with water and fire extinguishers," he added.
Due to this condition, in the process of extinguishing the fire, officers did not only extinguish the burning B3 waste warehouse area.
However, they also tried to limit the fire so as not to spread to residential areas. Because the location of the burning warehouse is not far from residential areas.
