JAKARTA - Brazilian President Luiz In Goodycio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump are likely to meet in Malaysia in the coming days, amid the high rates imposed by Washington.
The O Globo newspaper reported by citing sources that a meeting between the two leaders was agreed on Sunday in Malaysia, but the time has not yet been decided.
Brazilian diplomats told Reuters they were cautious on the matter because there had been no official confirmation from the White House.
A White House official previously said there was a "discussion on facilitating such gatherings" in Malaysia following a friendly phone call between the two heads of state last month, where they discussed economic and trade ties.
Trump raised US import rates for most of Brazil's goods to 50% from 10% in early August, linking the move to what he called a "witch hunt" against former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro was finally convicted in September by a panel of Supreme Courts with a sentence of more than 27 years in prison for planning a coup after he lost the 2022 general election to Lula.
