Addiction To Online Gambling, Men In Tarakan Desperate To Steal Gold And Cash

A recidivist with the initials IP was desperate to steal a number of jewelry gold belonging to a grocery store employee on Jalan Bayangkara, West Tarakan District, Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, allegedly because he needed money to play online gambling (judol).

The perpetrator's action was caught on surveillance cameras. CCTV footage shows the perpetrator taking a number of items from inside the shop, before running away. As a result, the victim lost millions of rupiah.

West Tarakan Police Chief Ipda Niger Andian said the modus operandi of the perpetrators was to come to the grocery store by ordering the victim to prepare a large number of basic necessities.

"When the victim began to be careless, the perpetrator was desperate to push into the shop," Niger told reporters, Monday, October 13.

The perpetrator immediately ransacked the wallet containing gold jewelry belonging to the victim along with Rp. 650,000 in cash lying on the shop table. Then, the perpetrator came out of the shop and argued that he would take the money at the atm to pay for his ordered goods. But the perpetrator fled.

As a result of the perpetrator's actions, a number of jewelry belonging to the victim consisting of three gold rings worth millions of rupiah, as well as cash belonging to the shop amounting to Rp. 650,000, were stolen by the perpetrators.

Armed with CCTV camera footage, the police finally managed to catch the perpetrator who turned out to be a recidivist in a similar case. The motive for the perpetrator was to steal is because of online gambling addiction.

The perpetrator IP is currently detained by the police and charged with Article 362 of the Criminal Code regarding theft. The threat is 5 years in prison.
