JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the government would conduct simultaneous decontamination at the location indicated being exposed to Cesium-137 (Cs-137) radioactive substances in the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, Serang Regency, Banten.

Minister of Environment and Forestry/Head of the Hanif Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), said the Task Force for Handling Hazard Management of Radionuclide Radiation Sesium-137 (Cs-137) had collaborated with the TNI AD Chemical Biology Nuclear Engineer Detachment (Denzi Nubika) to support the decontamination process with the Gegana Police Team, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) and the Ministry of Environment (KLH).

"So there are 300 security personnel who will come down starting tomorrow to speed up the handling. The ten points we found, we are not planning to be carried out in stages, carried out simultaneously at the same time 10 points for direct decontamination," said Hanif as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, October 10.

"So the point is to speed up the handling of decontamination," he added.

Regarding the prevention of exposure, BRIN has carried out zoning that divides the area of the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate and the surrounding area into red and yellow zones, with the red zone inaccessible to the public.

Hanif said the Task Force was calculating the affected households from the zoning of radioactive exposure, which was carried out in the section intensifying decontamination.

"Soon we will take more serious treatment, because we can't treat this anymore, then repeat it again," he explained.

Previously, the Task Force through KLH had sealed PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT) in the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, which was suspected of being a source of radioactive contamination for PT BMS frozen shrimp products exported to the US.

Regarding the handling of the health of the surrounding community, he explained that the Ministry of Health will handle it in the community. Meanwhile, for 1,500 people involved with two affected companies were asked to conduct health checks independently.

The Ministry of Health itself has examined 1,591 workers and residents from two affected locations. A total of nine people who were detected positive for Cs-137 have been referred to Fatmawati Hospital and sent home in stable condition.
