JAKARTA - The head of UN Women on Monday urged the international community to increase funding for women-led organizations working in conflict zones, warning of a decline in financial support threatening the progress that has been made on the agenda of Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
Speaking in a UN Security Council session marking the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous said the world was facing "an increase in military budgets and a new rejection of gender equality and multilateralism," which he warned of "threats to the foundations of global peace and security."
Bahous said, despite his "chrand and amazing commitment," the last 25 years have witnessed "weak implementation and chronic lack of investment" in women's participation in the peace process.
"The Secretary-General has just spoken about how the current funding trend jeopardizes the survival and security of women-led organizations in conflict-affected countries," he said, quoted by Anadolu, October 7.
UN Women believes, he added, "there is no alternative but to change course and invest significantly in women's organizations at the forefront of conflict."
Realizing the suffering caused by continuous war and refuge, Bahous said, "Despite the horrors of war and conflict, women continue to build peace."
Regarding the conflict in the Gaza Strip, he is in line with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who gave a "positive response to US President Donald Trump's proposal to end the Gaza war," calling for a lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and humanitarian access.

Raising five top priorities, Bahous urged "affirmive actions to ensure women get a proper place on the peace table," ending violence and impunity against women, and ensuring that account measures "make failures visible and have consequences."
"When women take the lead, peace will follow," he said, adding, "We have promised them 25 years ago; it's time for us to keep it."
