CIREBON - Cirebon City Police (Polresta) is investigating a light phenomenon in the sky that is suspected of having fallen in the Cirebon Regency area, West Java, on Sunday night.
Cirebon Police Chief Kombes Sumarni said his party immediately followed up on public reports and information circulating on social media by deploying police officers to a number of locations.
"After we received various information, both from social media and related parties, we immediately ordered all ranks to check in the field," he said in Cirebon, Antara, Monday, October 6.
Checks were carried out at various points, from the Ciperna area to East Cirebon, including arterial and toll roads. The police also coordinated with the village head to ensure that there were no extraordinary events in their respective areas.
"Until now, we have not received data or information showing a falling meteor and the like," he said.
The investigation, continued Sumarni, is still being carried out to ensure the truth of the phenomenon. Cirebon Police are also working with the Cirebon Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to explore possible impacts on earth, such as collisions or small fires.
However, until now, there have been no reports from the public or the findings of officers in the field which indicate that there is foreign material. The BPBD and related parties have also not stated that this incident occurred in the Cirebon area," he said.
Sumarni appealed to the public not to spread news that could not be confirmed. "So as not to cause misunderstandings," he said.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Kertajati Station also collected data related to loud bangs accompanied by a bright fireball suspected of being a meteor in Cirebon.
Head of the BMKG Prediction, Data and Information Working Team Kertajati Muhammad Syifhul Fuad said, from the meteorological side, the sound of the boom could be caused by several factors such as lightning strikes, earthquake activity, or landslides. However, at the time of the incident, the weather conditions in the Cirebon area were declared cloudy.
"Based on satellite imagery, there are no indications of convective clouds around the Cirebon area at the time of the incident," he said.
The astronomy professor from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Thomas Djamaluddin, gave a scientific explanation for the phenomenon. According to him, the explosions and fireballs that were seen by residents were most likely caused by a large meteor that fell in the Java Sea.
"From observations of the direction of the track, meteors passed from the Kuningan and Cirebon areas from the southwest at around 18.35 p.m. local time, then it was possible to fall in the Java Sea," he said.

The sound of loud bangs, added Thomas, was generated by a shock wave as the meteor enters the low atmospheric layer. I conclude it's a sizable meteor passing through," he said.
