JAKARTA - Switzerland will upgrade its anti-drone defense system to protect military infrastructure following the recent increase in drone sightings in Europe.
Swiss troops assigned the federal office for defense procurement, armasuisse, to acquire the system after a successful field trial this summer, the government said.
"Based on these findings and responding to the increasing number of drone sightings, the Army has instructed arbitration to prioritize the procurement of defense systems against micro and mini drones," the government said.
Separately, Armasuisse has signed a framework agreement with three suppliers for commercial mini-drones, accessories, and services worth about 108 million Swiss francs (US$136 million), he added. The company did not name the supplier.
The announcement comes a day after Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister met with his German counterpart and warned about the increasing threat posed by drones.
On Friday, the drone sighting at Munich airport last night caused the cancellation and diversion of dozens of flights.
