SERANG The government has intensified efforts to decontaminate Cesium-137 (Cs-137) radiation detected in the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, Serang Regency, Banten.

A joint cross-sector team evacuated contaminated materials and ensured that the affected areas were safe again.

Deputy for Control of Pollution and Environmental Damage of the Ministry of Environment (KLH) as well as the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Ratio Ridho Sani, said that as of last Thursday, the Task Force for Mitigation and Control of Radiation Source Contamination had carried out a thorough decontamination.

"The team lifted materials that had a high level of radiation using heavy equipment, then transferred them to a temporary storage facility owned by PT PMT," said Rasio in Serang, Antara, Friday, October 3.

One of the findings in the form of two jumbo bags and six High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) drums with high radiation levels were successfully secured.

In total until October 2, the team has lifted 20 drums, 17 jumbo bags, and three pallets. The entire process will continue until the area exposed to radionuclide Cs-137 is declared clean.

Minister of Environment and Head of BPLH Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that cross-sectoral cooperation, community involvement, and public information disclosure are very important to strengthen efforts to maintain environmental safety and public health.

Throughout the process of decontamination, the team was guided by the Radiation Protection Officer (PPR) from the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) to protect work safety from excessive exposure. The KBRN Polri Mobile Brigade Task Force team also closely supervised the entry and exit of vehicles so that there were no traces of radiation being carried outside the area.

From a health perspective, the Ministry of Health examined 1,562 workers in industrial areas and a radius of five kilometers around them. For workers who are indicated to be exposed to radiation, they are given a blue plassian drug to help remove Cs-137 from the body.

The government emphasized that this case was designated as a special event so that all cross-sectoral resources were deployed. "Recipients of benefits must really be protected from the risk of exposure," said Hanif.

Satgas selanjutnya akan melanjutkan dekontaminasi pada titik lain yang terdeteksi serta melakukan pemetaan ulang untuk memastikan tidak ada sisa radiasi yang terlewatkan.

The task force will then resume dactulation at other detected points and re-mapping to ensure no remaining radiation is missed.
