JAKARTA - Russia plans to start the process of selecting a new United Nations Secretary-General during its presidency at the world organization's Security Council in October, Russia's Ambassador to Ukraine Vasily Nebenzya said.

"Yes, indeed, we plan to start this process during our presidency," he said at a press conference, launching TASS October 2.

The UN Secretary-General election procedure begins with the preparation of a joint letter from the leaders of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.

"Yesterday I visited the President of the UN General Assembly (Annana Baerbock) to brief him on our presidential program for the Security Council, and I asked him this question, he fully agreed. We decided not to prepare any drafts," he said.

He noted that the preparation of the document takes a certain time, and will not necessarily be published in October.

"I hope by the end of the year, or maybe earlier, we can expect such a letter to find a way out," he said.

It is known that Russia began holding a rotating presidency of the UN Security Council on October 1 and ended on October 31, 2025.

"The president of Russia is focused on compliance with procedures, enforcement of efficiency, if needed, of course, and we will not hesitate to restore order in the assembly and demand that the delegation respects it," Nebenzya said, quoted by Anadolu.

The current term of office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, will end on December 31, 2026.

Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi has officially declared his candidacy as the next UN Secretary-General.
