YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) sent a team to Sidoarjo to assist in the evacuation of victims of the collapsed Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School (Ponpes) in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java.
The Head of the Yogyakarta Search and Rescue Office, Kamal Riswandi, stated that the team was dispatched at the behest of the Central Basarnas.
"The Yogyakarta Search and Rescue Office was instructed by the Central Basarnas Office to send a rescue team to assist in the evacuation process," he said in a written statement to Antara, Tuesday, September 30.
He stated that the team consisted of 10 rescue personnel and one public relations officer. They departed from the Yogyakarta Search and Rescue Office on Monday evening at 9:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) using a personnel truck.
"The team is equipped with one vehicle for personnel, one double-cabin vehicle, and equipment for evacuating victims from the rubble," Kamal said.
Kamal stated that the Yogyakarta Search and Rescue team coordinated with the Surabaya Search and Rescue Office and joined forces with the Basarnas Special Group (BSG), the Semarang Search and Rescue Office, and other joint SAR teams.
"The SAR Office team is coordinating with the Surabaya SAR Office and will join the Basarnas Special Group (BSG), the Semarang SAR Office, and other joint SAR teams," he said.
The Surabaya SAR Office received a report of the incident on Monday (September 29) afternoon at around 3:35 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) while the building was being concreted since morning. It is suspected that the foundation was weak, causing the multi-story building to collapse to the ground floor.
The SAR team faced challenges due to the dense rubble and narrow terrain, requiring excavation equipment to expedite access to the victims' location.
