JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) sent a team to East Java to assist efforts to recover after the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Banyuwangi and Situbondo areas on Thursday, September 26 afternoon.

Head of BNPB Suharyanto in a statement in Jakarta, Thursday night, said that his party ordered the Deputy for Emergency Management to monitor and take quick steps after receiving reports of quick assessment results from the field.

"The team will provide assistance and carry out initial data collection with BPBD and other cross-sectors," he said.

BNPB emphasized that this step is a form of the central government's commitment to be present in the initial phase of the disaster and ensure that the affected community gets support immediately.

In addition to assistance, the BNPB team was also assigned to ensure that coordination between agencies went well, starting from the evacuation process, meeting basic needs to accelerating recovery efforts.

The epicenter of the 5.7 magnitude earthquake was located in the sea, 46 kilometers northeast of Banyuwangi and 54 kilometers southeast of Situbondo at a depth of 12 kilometers.

The tremors of the earthquake were felt strong for 2-3 seconds in Banyuwangi and Situbondo and had made people panic and scattered out of their homes.

The results of the rapid assessment received by BNPB, meanwhile, show that in Banyuwangi there is one house and one place of worship is lightly damaged.

Meanwhile, in Situbondo, 21 were heavily damaged, 11 were moderately damaged, 16 were lightly damaged and one mosque was damaged on the roof.

BNPB ensures that at least until 21.20 WIB there have been no reports of casualties due to the earthquake, and field data collection is still ongoing and will continue to be updated by a team of joint regional officers.
