The Provincial Government's Request, The Ex-Mining Hole 'transformed' Into A Clean Water Lake For Residents

SAMARINDA The East Kalimantan Provincial Government asked mining companies in the area to manage former mining holes (voids) to become strategic raw water sources for the community.

"The water potential of the former mine hole in East Kalimantan, such as in Berau Coal, is very massive. If managed with the right technology, the site of the former mine can be a long-term solution to the clean water crisis in the surrounding area," said Head of the East Kalimantan Energy and Mineral Resources Service (ESDM) Bambang Arwanto in Samarinda, Antara, Thursday, September 25.

The policy surfaced when the Governor of East Kalimantan Rudy Mas'ud made a working visit to PT Berau Coal to directly review one example of environmental management.

The post-mining area that has been reviewed has transformed into a source of raw water supply with a potential volume of up to 100 million cubic meters.

Governor Rudy Mas'ud said the assets could be processed into clean water, even drinking water to serve the community widely. He hopes that the management of raw water sources from the Bernau Coal vocals can be collaborated with regional companies belonging to the Berau Regency Government for the needs of the community.

"Utilization of fluid as a water reserve is also an anticipatory step to face the challenges of climate change and the threat of drought in the future, with a record that it must comply with safe standards," he said.

This effort, he said, is a commitment of local governments so that the business world not only stops at the exploration and exploitation stage, but also provides a sustainable contribution to community welfare and regional development.

He added that the success of the program in Berau is expected to be a pilot model for other mining companies throughout East Kalimantan. The provincial government is also committed to continuing to oversee and facilitate every reclamation initiative that provides significant added value to the economy and the quality of life of citizens.
