Malta's Turn To Recognize Palestine At The United Nations Session

JAKARTA - Malta officially conveyed to President Mahmoud Abbas about its intention to recognize the Palestinian State at a UN General Assembly conference in New York next week.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malta, Christopher Cutajar, handed over Prime Minister Robert Abela's official letter to the Palestinian Ambassador to Malta, Fadi Hanania, who confirmed his country's decision to recognize the Palestinian State during next week's UN General Assembly in New York, United States.

In the letter, as reported by Malta Today, Prime Minister Abela reiterated Malta's "firm support" for the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Abela also ensured that the Maltese government would formalize its recognition of the Palestinian state at the 80th UN General Assembly.

Russia's News Agency, Sputnik, reports that the Portuguese Government will officially recognize the Palestinian State on Sunday (21/9), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Portugal would recognize the Palestinian State, as stated by Minister Paulo Range earlier this week. The official declaration of Palestinian State Recognition will take place on Sunday, September 21, before next week's Summit, the ministry said, Friday (19/9) reported by ANTARA.

Earlier, on July 25, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France would officially recognize the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly in September.

To date, the Palestinian State has been recognized by 147 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the United States will veto the full membership of Palestine in the United Nations (UN).

In the same year, ten countries have recognized Palestine, including Ireland, Norway, Spain and Armenia.
