JAKARTA - The United Nations (UN) voiced concern over the depletion of food supplies and other supplies in northern Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people have experienced starvation, after Israel closed its only crossing there last week.
Israel began a ground attack on the northern Gaza City on Tuesday and stepped up efforts to vacate the city from civilians by opening additional routes to the south.
Hundreds of thousands of people took refuge in the city and many were reluctant to follow Israel's orders to move because of the dangers along the way, bad conditions, lack of food in the southern region, and fear of permanent evacuation.
"There are great concerns about the depletion of fuel and food stocks in a matter of days as now there is no point of entry for aid directly into northern Gaza and the resupply from south to north is increasingly difficult due to increased road congestion and insecurity," the UN humanitarian office (OCHA) said in a statement. Zikim's crossing closed on September 12 and no aid group has been able to import supplies since.
On Tuesday evening, the Israeli military said humanitarian aid would be allowed into northern Gaza, without providing further details.
