Indonesia Asks The International Community To Take Firm Action Against Israel In The UN Human Rights Council Debate

JAKARTA - Indonesia has asked the international community to take firm action against Israel, following the country's attack on Qatar last week, during a debate at the United Nations (UN).

At the request of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OKI) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland held an Urgent Debate to discuss Israeli attacks targeting Hamas officials in Doha, Qatar on September 9.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker T\"urk in the opening of the debate referred to Israeli attacks on negotiators in Doha as a flagrant violation of international law, an attack on regional peace and security.

Turk on the occasion also echoed the statement of UN Secretary-General Ant Totalio Guterres who denounced the attack as "discrete violation" of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In this Emergency Debate, Indonesia was represented by the Ad Interim Business Authority of PTRI Geneva Ambassador Achsanul Habib. As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Indonesia emphasized that the attack on Qatar, which acted as a mediator, was a betrayal of the peace process, as well as a serious violation of the UN Charter and international human rights law.

Ambassador Habib stressed that this kind of military action has undermined trust, shattered hopes of peace in Gaza and should not be left irresponsible.

"The international community must act decisively," said Ambassador Habib in a statement from PTRI Geneva, Tuesday, September 16 evening.

On this occasion, Indonesia also emphasized that lasting peace in the Middle East will not be achieved without a two-state solution, expressing full support forQatar, Palestine, and all countries that defend justice, sovereignty and human values.

The high participation of UN human rights Council member countries, observer countries, and international NGOs, with 93 national statements from UN member states and 12 from international NGOs, shows the great concern of the international community for international law violations that Israel continues to commit, as well as a commitment to ending Israel's impunity.
