LAMPUNG - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reminded local governments to increase their vigilance to deal with potential floods and extreme weather in line with most parts of Indonesia entering the transition from the dry season to the rain.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said that high rainfall during this transition period could cause hydrometeorological disasters.

"From the end of August to September, most areas have entered the transition of the season. This phenomenon is marked by heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds," he said in Jakarta, Monday, which was confiscated by Antara.

Based on the BMKG forecast, the 2025/2026 rainy season is generally normal, but some areas have the potential to experience above normal rain, including West Java, parts of Central Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

BMKG predicts heavy rain on 12'14 September 2025 has the potential to occur in Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta, while on 15'18 September 2025 it has the potential to hit Central Java and East Java.

He stressed the importance of long-term mitigation efforts to reduce flood risk, including cleaning of primary and secondary drainage and normalizing shallow rivers.

"Preparedness cannot only rely on emergency operations, but must be integrated since before the disaster," he said.

He said BNPB together with BMKG had also prepared a weather modification operation to reduce rainfall in vulnerable areas, including East Java and West Java.

In addition, the public is advised to maintain environmental cleanliness, not throw garbage into the river, and actively participate in mutual cooperation in preventing flooding.
