Poland shot down a drone entering its airspace in a massive Russian attack on western Ukraine on Wednesday.
The NATO member called the attack an "action of aggression" and marked the alliance's first time member opened fire in the war.
Poland's airspace was violated by a large number of Russian unmanned aircraft.
The drones that pose a direct threat were shot down, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
A NATO spokesman said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had communicated with Polish leadership and the alliance was in close consultation with Poland.
Polish military command said drones repeatedly violated Polish airspace during a Russian attack on the western Ukrainian border, but enforcement operations against these abuses have now ended.
Radar tracks more than 10 objects and objects that have the potential to pose a threat have been "dinetralated," the command said.
"The search and effort to find potential locations for the fall of these objects is ongoing," he said in a statement.
The command thanked the NATO air command and the Dutch Air Force F-35 fighter for his assistance.
The command appealed to the public to stay at home, calling the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin areas the most risky areas.
"This is an act of aggression which is a real threat to the safety of our citizens," he said.
Since the war began in 2022, there have been several incidents of Russian drones entering the airspace of countries bordering Ukraine, including Poland and Romania, but so far they have avoided shootings.
Officials mentioned the physical dangers that these actions could pose and the desire to avoid an escalation of tensions between Russia and NATO.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used 415 drones and 40 missiles in an attack in Ukraine overnight. It was reported that there were 8 aircraft "ditujukkan to Poland".
