JAKARTA - Malaysia will increase the number of bus stops and sidewalks for pedestrian paths in its country as part of reducing the burden on public transport users.

The Minister of Housing and Government of Malaysia Nga Kor Ming said the process of working on this project is scheduled to be completed in 2027. Each additional bus stop will be equipped with a smart pole for the availability of passengers and LED screens to inform them of the latest information on transportation in Malaysia.

"This move reflects the importance of smart city development in increasing public comfort and accessibility," he said at a press conference after the opening ceremony of the 8th ASEAN Smart City Network (ASCN8) today, quoted from Bernama.

"Until now, 36 of the 156 local governments (Pemda) across the country have adopted the initiative of smart cities under the direction of PLANMalaysia," he continued.

Projects as part of this smart city have been adopted in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.

Nga said in Putrajaya, for example, a command center monitors the city through a wide CCTV network that records accidents, thefts, and other incidents directly (real-time).

He said the high-definition recording could also serve as evidence in court, thus making the city safer.

"Smart city features also include an artificial intelligence-powered traffic light system (AI) that adjusts signals based on traffic flow to reduce congestion.

"By reducing congestion, this system increases productivity, saves time, and prevents roads from becoming what we can call the 'largest car park in the world'," he said.
