The Attorney General's Office has named the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, as a new suspect in the alleged corruption case in the procurement of a chromebook laptop at the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The Head of the Attorney General's Office, Anang Supriatna, said that the determination of the suspect against Nadiem Makarim was based on the results of the exposure carried out by the investigation team.

"From the results of the deepening of the statements of witnesses and also the available evidence and the results of the exposure have determined a new suspect with the initials NAM," Anang told reporters, Thursday, September 4.

The determination was known after Nadiem Makarim underwent several examinations at the Attorney General's Office regarding the handling of the alleged corruption case.

Nadiem Makarim is the fifth suspect in the case. Originally, there were four other suspects, namely Mulyatsyah, former junior high school director of Kemendikbudristek; Sri Wahyuningsih, former elementary school director of Kemendikbudristek; Ibrahim Arief, technology consultant at the Ministry of Education and Culture; and Jurist Tan, a former special staff member of the Ministry of Education and Technology.

It is known that the case began when the Ministry of Education and Culture carried out the procurement of information and communication technology (ICT) devices at the PAUD to SMA levels in 2020-2022 for underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) areas as many as 1.2 million units of chromebook laptops with a total budget of IDR 9.3 trillion sourced from the APBN and special allocation funds (DAK).

The AGO stated that the purpose of procuring ICT devices in the form of 1.2 million chromebook laptops for school students was not achieved because Chrome OS had many weaknesses for the 3T area, so the suspect's actions were considered detrimental to state finances. The use of chromebooks is very dependent on the internet connection. In fact, internet access in many parts of Indonesia has not been evenly distributed.
