JAKARTA - The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) conducted a raid in the Bukit Bintang area. A total of 770 illegal immigrants were apprehended from the location.

JIM's Director of Enforcement, Basri Othman, said the operation, conducted on Tuesday, September 3, from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM, was in response to public complaints over the past three weeks about the discomfort of foreign nationals gathering at the location to socialize.

"Even more surprising, officers also discovered an online gambling den (judol) equipped with a closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance system," Basri said in a press conference at the raid location last night, as quoted by Bernama.

"When officers broke down the door, seven foreign nationals were still busy gambling online, unaware of the presence of the operation officers. They were all arrested," he continued.

Basri said that despite the dark environment and narrow alleys complicating the operation, 106 law enforcement officers successfully conducted checks on 2,445 people, consisting of 1,600 foreign nationals and 845 local citizens.

Of the total, 770 foreign nationals were detained for various immigration violations, including not having identity documents, overstaying, and possessing unrecognized cards or passes.

"All detainees, aged between 21 and 65, were taken to JIM Putrajaya for initial checks before being placed at the Bukit Jalil and Lenggeng Immigration Depots for further investigation," he said.

A number of those arrested are suspected of violating Article 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying, Article 6(1)(c) for not possessing valid travel documents, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

They are also being investigated under the Passport Act 1966 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
