BANDA ACEH - The case of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver Affan Kurniawan, who died after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle (rantis) during a demonstration in Central Jakarta on August 28, is being monitored by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM).
"Komnas HAM has conducted field monitoring and will immediately submit recommendations to the relevant parties," said Komnas HAM Commissioner Atnike Nova Sigiro in Banda Aceh, as reported by ANTARA on Saturday, August 30.
Atnike made this statement while answering reporters' questions after a meeting with Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah regarding the commemoration of International Human Rights Day 2025 in Banda Aceh.
Previously, a Brimob vehicle hit and crushed a green-jacketed motorcycle taxi driver, killing him as police attempted to disperse a protest on Jalan Penjernihan I, Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta.
Because there have been casualties during the demonstrations, Atnike urged the police to handle the situation professionally and carefully, prioritizing the safety of civilians.
"The legal process must be carried out humanely and carefully, while respecting human rights principles," she said.
The government must also provide assistance and rehabilitation to the victims and communities affected by the demonstrations.
Furthermore, she urged the public not to be provoked into committing anarchic acts that could harm all parties, especially themselves.
"Let's build a conducive space so that freedom and the aspirations for freedom of expression in Indonesian democracy can be nurtured with respect for the law and human rights protection," she said.
Atnike added that the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is currently monitoring the situation, including providing information through various media. They are also coordinating with relevant ministries and institutions, particularly the police.
For the record, the Head of the Propam Division of the Indonesian National Police, Inspector General Abdul Karim, stated that his office is investigating seven members of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Satbrimob) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) regarding the incident that resulted in the death of an online motorcycle taxi (ojol).
The seven members being questioned are Kompol C, Aipda M, Bripka R, Briptu B, Bripda M, Baraka Y, and Baraka J.
