Demonstration at DPR: Students Sprayed with Water Cannons, Some Arrested by Police

JAKARTA - Student protests in front of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) building in Senayan, Central Jakarta, heated up again despite heavy rain on Thursday, August 28th.

The protesters continued to surround the DPR building at two points: the front gate on Gatot Soebroto Street and the Pancasila Gate on Gelora Street.

The protesters pounded on the DPR building fence with hammers, and set fire to electrical poles and tires, but this was eventually extinguished.

In response, police used water cannons to disperse the students. The protesters retaliated by throwing firecrackers at the officers.

The students then retreated to the pedestrian bridge in front of the DPR building. According to VOI's observations on the ground, at 3:25 PM, several people were also detained by police.

Security personnel remained on standby around the location and continued to prevent the protesters from entering the parliamentary complex.
