In the Babel Regional Election Rerun, 343 Inmates from the Pangkalpinang Narcotics Prison Voted

JAKARTA - A total of 343 inmates at the Class II A Narcotics Prison in Pangkalpinang City, Bangka Belitung Islands Province (Babel), exercised their right to vote in the 2025 Regional Elections.

"Thank God, the implementation of the re-elections at this prison went democratically, safely, and smoothly," said Herman Sawiran, Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for the Bangka Belitung Islands, while reviewing the re-elections at the Class II A Narcotics Prison in Pangkalpinang on Wednesday, as reported by Antara.

He stated that the Bangka Belitung Islands Directorate General of Corrections provided the widest possible opportunity for all inmates registered as residents of Pangkalpinang City to exercise their right to vote democratically for the Mayor and Deputy Mayoral Candidates for Pangkalpinang on Wednesday (August 27).

"We ensure that there is no coercion or pressure on inmates to elect regional heads in this re-election," he said.

He stated that currently, 343 inmates at the Class II A Pangkalpinang Narcotics Penitentiary are registered on the Permanent Voter List (DPT), plus an additional 14 inmates on the Supplemental Voter List (DPTb).

"The implementation of the repeat regional elections within the prison environment is clear evidence that the political rights of every citizen must be protected and fulfilled without exception, including for inmates," he said.

He hopes that with this opportunity, inmates will exercise their right to vote responsibly and with a high level of democratic awareness.

The Head of the Class II A Pangkalpinang Narcotics Penitentiary, Maman Herwaman, emphasized the importance of conducting a safe and orderly regional election within the prison environment.

"We continue to strive to maintain security and order throughout the election process so that all stages can run smoothly and conducively. We hope that this activity will not only serve as an opportunity to exercise voting rights, but also as a means of democratic education for inmates," he said.

On this occasion, representatives from the Republic of Indonesia Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), the Bangka Belitung Islands Province Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and the Pangkalpinang City Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) were also present to oversee the implementation of the Repeat Regional Election at the Pangkalpinang Class II A Narcotics Prison. In addition, the Pangkalpinang Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Max Mariners and the Head of the Pangkalpinang City District Attorney's Office, Sri Heny Alamsari, were also present.
